Labrador retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the States, according to the “Dog Breed Info” website. Extremely intelligent as they are, Labradors are also known to be loyal, loving, willing and affectionate. They stem into three different groups, one of which is the black Labrador.

Black Labradors are widely acknowledged to be the smartest within their breed, as opposed to their yellow and chocolate ‘opponents’.

Black Labs have shiny, smooth, short coats of beautiful black fur.

According to the “Labrador Retriever Guide” website, they get their dark color from very dense coat pigment granules.

The “Dog Breed Info” website recommends brushing their coats on a regular basis. This will keep their fur shinny and smooth, just the way it is supposed to be.

When it comes to their size, black Labradors can grow to be pretty large. Females are usually smaller than males. While female black Labs typically grow to be between 21 and 23 inches in height, male black Labs can grow up to 24 inches. Female black Labs typically do not weigh over 70 lbs., but males can weigh up to 100 lbs. They are notorious over-eaters and they will eat pretty much anything.

It is probably the best to monitor the diet of black Labs carefully, as well as exercising the dog sufficiently, to avoid excess weight gain.

Since they are clever ‘little’ pooches, humans have been employing them for many purposes.

Black Labs, but also yellow and chocolate Labs, are easily trained and have been used for hunting, tracking, search, rescue and police work.

They are also commonly used as service dogs for the blind and disabled. If you own one of these clever pooches, you should feel quite proud.
