Although they might be made of the same stuff and serve the same purpose, not every breed and situation will let you freely choose between the two main types of leashes. In that name, here are a few directions on how and why to go for either a harness or a collar for your dog.

Choking Hazard Or Fashion Detail?

Most people would rather go for a much more decent-looking collar for their pooch. However, there are a few cases in which this necklace-like leash simply isn’t an option.

Whether you’re using a head halter or a chain slip variation of the collar, you’re exposing your pet to injury if it usually pulls a lot or if it suffers from respiratory or trachea problems.

This is where the harness comes in – instead of wrapping only around your dog’s neck, this leash braces your pet’s shoulders and chest, giving you more control and taking the pulling power away from your enthusiastic pooch.

Once you establish which type of leash is appropriate for your dog, all that’s left to decide is whether to go for a cloth, nylon, or leather collar, or the size and strength of a harness.
