Home-Grooming-101-cover

Is your pup’s grooming bill burning a hole through your pocket? Do you find grooming a great way of expressing your creativeness and love for your pup at the same time? If at least one answer to these questions is “yes,” then home grooming might be the right choice for you and your beloved pooch. If you’re uncertain what tools you need for DIY dog grooming to keep your dog looking sharp and feeling great, as usual, we’ve got you covered.

Dog-Specific Shampoos And Conditioners

The goal of bathing your pooch is to clean him or her, without stripping too much oil. The pH levels of our favorite four-legged friends are different than ours, and their skin is more sensitive and absorbent.

With that in mind, it’s easy to understand that you may only use dog-specific shampoos and conditioners when bathing your pup.

The choices are endless and you can pick a shampoo that you and your dog will both like. Conditioners will keep the dog’s coat from getting dull, and it will cut down tangles and matting.

There are also waterless options, like waterless shampoos and wipes, which are useful to have on hand. They’re great for post-surgery dogs, those that are afraid of water, or when you only need to clean a spot on their fur.

Nail Clippers

While choosing a nail clipper you must have your dog’s size in mind, but also, the size of your own hand. The clipper must be big enough to handle the nail when open, and it should feel comfortable in your own hand. Be careful not to clip too much, as it will cause a lot of pain for your pup.

Nail files and grinders are also incredibly handy, as they can take off rough edges and easily shape your pup’s nails. Grinders are specifically designed to cut the risk of bleeding.

Hair Clippers

Hair clippers or shears are a great asset for DYI dg grooming, but you have to know what you’re doing. Take some lessons and ask for advice from more experienced dog owners and groomers alike. The matter shouldn’t be taken lightly. Most clippers come with a standard blade and comb attachments.

Blunt-Tip Scissors

This tool is great for careful, controlled cutting of face fur and the area between paw pads.
