Cooking for your canine buddy can be fun and rewarding, but make sure you include healthy ingredients and glean info from nutritionally complete recipes.

Just like commercial dog food manufacturers have to meet certain requirements for nutritional balance, you must meet them in homemade environment as well. If you have any additional doubts or questions, feel free to consult your vet to steer you in the right direction.

Here, we will cover the basics when it comes to preparing homemade dog diets.

Basic Components

Three main components your homemade meal must contain are protein, fiber and carbohydrates.

Generally, puppies need 25% – 30% protein in their meals, while adults don’t require more than 18%.

The protein requirements do change according to your pooch’s age, and they also vary according to breed, thus it would be wise to check out the optimal amount with your vet.

When it comes to carbs, commercial dog foods don’t list right percentage as the proper percentage of carbohydrates in canine diet is still not set in stone by the veterinary community. However, when you’re making your pooch’s meals yourself, go ahead and purchase the freshest, highest-quality ingredients available, just to be on the safe side.

Also, weigh your canine buddy from time to time just to make sure he stays a healthy weight.
