Looking for a tiny and cute dog breed that is very adaptable and so cat friendly that it will practically start thinking it is one of them? Look no further as the Pomeranian just might be the breed for you.

Origin

Also known as Pom Pom, the breed has been made popular by a number of royal people since the 18th century. Queen Victoria owned a particularly small Pomeranian, thus making this smaller variety of the breed universally popular. During Queen Victoria’s lifetime alone, the size of the breed decreased by 50%.

Description

These small balls of fur weigh between 4.2–7.7 lb and 5.0–11 inches high at the withers.

The breed is compact and sturdy with an abundant textured coat with a highly plumed tail set high and flat.

The top coat forms a ruff of fur on the neck, which Pom Poms are well known for.

They come in the widest variety of colors of any dog breed: white, black, brown, red, orange, cream, blue, sable, black and tan, brown and tan, spotted, brindle, plus combinations of all those colors. The most common colors, however, are orange, black or cream/white.

As for their temperament, the Pomeranians are typically quite friendly, playful and lively pooches that love to be around their owners and are known to be very protective of them.

Pros

  • adaptable
  • friendly
  • lively

Cons

  • luxating patella is a common condition (floating kneecap)
  • can suffer from a skin condition colloquially known as black skin disease

Should I adopt/buy a Pomeranian?

If you are looking for that pocket size, extremely cute and lively ball of fur that is also rather friendly, the Pomeranian is definitely the pooch for your needs.
