Older Female Dogs & Pregnancy

September 26, 2019

If you have an experienced female pooch and you thought her prime was long gone, but somehow she comes home from her day off and you realize she’s pregnant, you might be in a pickle.

What is generally a normal and straightforward experience can be quite complicated if your dog is older, so some extra care and caution are needed.

How Do I Know She’s Pregnant?

Regardless of age, symptoms are usually pretty standard.

She’ll initially get sick, lose her appetite and become lethargic.

If you notice any of these, it’s important to pay a visit to your vet so he can decide if your pooch is healthy enough to continue with the pregnancy.

Later in pregnancy, she will start to develop more breast tissue and larger nipples, her abdomen will grow bigger, as well as her appetite.

Change In Diet

If you decide to go along with it, and the vet said she’s healthy enough, you should put her on high-quality, high-protein and high-fat food as soon as possible, in order to support her body through the pregnancy.

It’s also paramount that she exercise regularly and have regular vet check ups.

Signs Of Labor

It is quite important to know your dog’s gestation period in order to estimate the due date and make all the necessary preparations.

When the labor starts her water will break and you’ll notice contractions in the abdomen.
