Pet Insurance – What Does It Mean?

Like us, dogs also age, get sick, or can get into accidents. And like us, they can also get an insurance policy that will cover only specific things or anything that might happen to your canine. With that in mind, here’s how and when you should get insurance for your pet.

Peace Of Mind

There are a lot of things to look out for when getting a pet insurance policy. Just like with human insurance, these policies are very different from each other in terms of coverage, reimbursement, deductibles, etc.

For starters, find out how the policy will reimburse you.

Do you have to pay the vet up front, then wait to be reimbursed? If so, learn about the claims process and the time it takes.

Also, remember that different policies work at different doctors.

There’s usually a list of vets at which you can get reimbursed, so make sure your favorite is on that list before you get the policy.

Finally, establish how long the policy will be in effect and if that suits you. Most pet policies last for a year and can only be renewed if the company approves. In this case, they won’t look at the illnesses treated during previous coverage, but will instead consider them as preexisting conditions.

It ultimately comes down to you and your pet. Once you consider your dog’s age and breed-specific needs, as well as your own finances, you’ll be able to find just the right pet insurance policy that will let you sleep at night.
