The ‘Drop It’ Command

This simple command comes in handy during a game of fetch, but it can in fact potentially save your pooch’s life. Using intimidation and force is never a good idea as you can eventually make your dog fear you, and we don’t want that.

With a healthy dose of patience and consistency, you can teach your furry friend the “drop it” command. It will give you peace of mind as well, since you’ll always be able to retrieve whatever potentially hazardous item he ends up having in his mouth.

Steps to Follow

Dog toys and a bag of dog treats are a must. Use a dog toy that your pet companion likes but isn’t fond of to the point that he’ll ignore the treats when you offer them.

Display the dog toy to your pet companion and allow him to take it in his mouth and chew on it for a few seconds.

Present him with a treat and the moment he opens his mouth and drops the toy to get to the treat, say “drop it.”

Give him the treat, but take the toy from the floor at the same time. Wait a few seconds, then give him his toy back. Repeat the routine several times to make sure he consistently drops the toy to get the treat.

If he starts dropping the toy on the command, make sure you praise him and give him a treat.

If, on the other hand, he doesn’t drop the toy, go back a few steps and make sure there aren’t any distractions in your environment (loud TV or radio, other family members, etc).
