Weaning A Puppy From The Mother

Pups Weaning

Much like human babies, during their first months on this world pups also depend entirely on mother’s milk. It provides all the necessary vitamins and proteins they need, but it cannot last forever.

Weaning is the period when a pup stops drinking milk (or milk replacement formula for nutrition) and learns to eat solid puppy foods. The process is generally initiated and completed by the mother, however, human intervention is sometimes needed, especially when dealing with an orphaned pup.

Timing Is Crucial

Weaning usually starts when the puppy is between 3 and 4 weeks old, and it should be completed by the time a pup is 7 or 8 weeks old.

It is the same with orphaned puppies. It is important not to wean them before this age, because a pup needs that precious time with the mother so it can learn essential socialization skills.

Also, their little bodies aren’t ready to digest solid foods just yet.

Intervening With The Weaning

In some situations you will need to intervene in this process yourself. First, arrange an isolated area to put the pup for a few hours every day away from her mother. Make sure this area is warm and draft-free.

This way the pup will be able to explore, become self-confident and become independent. You can gradually increase the time spent away from the mother.

This is the right time to first offer small amounts of puppy food. Dissolve the solid food in a shallow pie pan to create a soft texture so it is easier for your little ball of fur to eat.

Also, make sure fresh water is nearby to drink. The little one will probably have some difficulties at first, but he’ll figure everything out soon enough.
