Do Dogs Dream?

Have you ever noticed certain twitching and moving of the paws while your pooch is sleeping? Well, those movements mean your canine friend is dreaming, indeed. Dogs dream in a similar fashion to people and they also dream almost every time they are asleep.

Much like humans, pooches need to enter the REM (rapid-eye movement) state, or deeper sleep, in order to thread across the dreamland.

Their sleep also comes in cycles, which means your dog enters and leaves the REM state in stages during his nap time.

According to USA Today’s Paw Print Post, canines enter REM sleep at different intervals depending on their sizes.

For example, smaller dogs dream more frequently than larger dogs, and they usually dream for a 1 minute (or so) every 10 minutes. Large dogs, on the other hand, tend to have 5 times longer dreams every 45 to 90 minutes.

Natural & Necessary

It is important to know that dreaming is natural and, in fact, necessary for the mental health of our canine friends. This is why you shouldn’t be waking your pooch every time you see him twitching, shivering, shaking, or even running in his sleep.

These movements and noises dogs make while dreaming are also perfectly normal. They might twitch their paws or jerk their legs simulating the running action, which happens when they dream they are running. Your pooch can make all other kinds of funny movements like shaking his whiskers or even making some hilarious faces.
