Much like humans, dogs find moving day quite stressful. Your pooch’s security lies in the familiarity of his environment and in people who surround him, so a move can be rather upsetting and confusing to your ball of fur.

Adjustment Period

This depends on the dog’s temperament, breed and age, but generally, it can take from a couple of days to several weeks for him to start feeling comfortable again. Also, older dogs, as well as dogs with health issues, will have more difficulties and will need more time to adjust. You can help your dog with a gradual transition to your new home.

Early Bird

Start early. If your dog is shy, reserved and cautious by nature, some extra effort is needed.

Dogs are able to sense any kind of change, so you might want to start packing those boxes as early as possible.

This will give your pooch time to gradually adjust to the new situation and will have enough time to process new emotions.

Set aside a box just for your dog’s bowls and toys, and let him watch as you pack some inside. If possible, take your dog for several walks in your new neighborhood before you move there for good. He will have the opportunity to explore the territory in advance.

His New Spot

Older dogs usually take a tad longer to adjust than young dogs or puppies. Puppies are more lively, curious and eager to explore, thus will adapt much more easily.

Having spent more time in your home, an older dog won’t accept the change of environment as easily. If you’re moving your belongings gradually, take your dog along on trips to your new home. Bring one of his dog beds and some toys, and place them in the room that will be his primary location.

In time he will completely forget his old home.
