Running with your dog can be a wonderful activity that’s healthy for both you and your pooch, but before you get your running gear on, here are a few important aspects to consider.

The first thing you need to assess is the size of your dog. Toy dogs are not meant for running. They get their exercise from chasing their tail around the coffee table.

If, on the other hand, you have a medium-sized dog you could consider taking it for a run, provided you are not training for the marathon.

Larger dogs, such as Dobermans, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and so on, can be perfect running buddies. Keep in mind that your dog should be well trained for this activity for two reasons.

First, if your dog is on a leash it must be obedient enough as to not pull you too hard when it catches a glimpse of a squirrel or any other distraction. Otherwise, you might fall and get hurt, something that is totally preventable when your dog is well trained.

Second, if your dog is not on a leash it must be so well trained as to follow your every command and stay as close to you as possible. It must not, at any point during your run, decide to go on without you.
