Kissing your dog may come completely natural to you, especially after a long day at work when you finally make it home and your pooch welcomes you as the brightest shining star in its life, which you are.

Planting a kiss on your dog’s face and letting it reciprocate by licking your face can pose potential health hazards as gums of both humans and dogs contain bacteria and can be transferred through kissing and in turn lead to the development of certain illnesses.

One of the biggest issues with engaging in kissing your pooch is the fact that bacteria found in their mouths can lead to gum disease in humans. Their mouths aren’t cleaner than human mouths and by letting your dog kiss you you’re putting yourself at risk of periodontal disease, such as periodontitis.

As adorable as such affection may be, you should think twice before you allow your pet’s mouth anywhere near your face. Periodontitis has been linked to diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease, and since there are other ways to show the love you have for your dog why risk it?
